Visual Studio Code – VSCode, Microsoft’s no-cost and open source developer-oriented text editor now runs matively on Apple Silicon Macs equipped with Apple M1 chips. The devices that uses M1 SoC includes the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac mini.
Since VSCode 1.54, Microsoft will offer a separate ARM64 build. However, if you are already on a stable installation, you will not get an update yet to the Apple Silicon version.
Native VSCode M1 build means better performance, longer battery life and less strange bugs thanks to the absence of Rosetta.
Here’s how to download VSCode M1 build.
- Go to Visual Studio Code official website. Select Other downloads as in the screenshot below.
- In MacOS section, select Apple Silicon build.
- Wait for a few seconds as the download starts.
- Alternatively, you can go straight to Visual Studio Code Insiders page to download latest beta builds (expect bugs and crashes).
