From version 1.2, RStudio has added support for custom editor themes.
Users can change the background color of the editor as well as color palette for codes inside RStudio.
Customized look and feel can be exported to a tmTheme (TextMate theme format) or rstheme (RStudio theme) file. The tmTheme file format is a widely accepted standard and can be used by other text editors such as Sublime Text and TextMate. The rstheme is an in-house theme preset format, built specifically for RStudio.
Where can I find good RStudio themes?
RStudio doesn’t have a dedicated market or directory of themes at the time of this writing. If you want to find RStudio themes, you will have to look for them in the wild internet.
However, there were a few attempt to address the lack of theme market for RStudio.
This online tmTheme editor hosted at Heroku contains a huge selection of pre-built RStudio tmTheme for you to download. It also allows you to customize one of its RStudio themes to better suit your own personal preference.
Users who takes their time to customize things often post their RStudio themes in Github. You can check out a curated list of RStudio themes in Github by mkearney, although it hasn’t been updated for about a year.
If nothing catch your eyes, you can always perform a Google search for something like “Rstudio 80s theme” as a last resort before building your own theme.
How to change theme in RStudio
Once you’ve downloaded or created a theme of your own, open up RStudio.
- Open Global Options
First, you have to open Tools from the menu bar. From the drop-down, select Global Options.
- Switch to Appearance section
In the left panel, select Appearance
- Browse for Rstudio theme files
Click Add button and browse to the location of tmTheme or rstheme file. If the theme needs to be converted using xml2 package, RStudio will prompt you to install it, select Yes in the dialog.
- Apply settings
Once the installation is completed, you will see your theme in the list of installed themes. Select it and click OK to apply changes to RStudio.
